Do we stand with the OPPRESSORS?

December 18th, 2005

Hi there Everyone,

I am still here, I just got back from the Thai-Burma border where I was yet again challenged by the way I conceive of and "do" life.

Everyday existence is a struggle for the world’s poor and oppressed.

Reading a book by Desmond Tutu, "God Has a Dream" and was humbled by the following:

"There is no neutrality in a situation of injustice and oppression.  If you say you are neutral, you are a liar, for you have already taken sides with the powerful. Our God is not a neutral God. We have a God who does take sides"

Does anyone disagree with this?

This is not theme I commonly hear preached on, yet, wow, I need to hear it again, WE need to hear it again!

My pastor has a sermon called something like “God doesn’t love everyone the same/equally” and how God loves the poor and downtrodden more than others. It’s cool. I like the quote and will check out the book.

Right on Jenn, I’d love to hear that sermon, gotta tape?

It’s a seriously great book, one every one should have a read! Especially those who like to abuse anyone in a position iof authority or power. (That makes it an essential for us Aussies!)

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of
the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you
say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”
    Bishop Desmond Tutu
