How To Be Truly Wicked

December 15th, 2006

Sister Joan Chittester, a Carmelite Nun, in one of her talks let rip with this beauty:

" The only way to be truly wicked in this world is not to break the law, but to follow it to the very letter…"

It made me want to both laugh and cry.

Why was so much of the religion I was brought up on so focussed on "keeping the law to the very letter," especially when Paul was so clear it was a futile exercise?

Mate it’s all part of the myth that christians are meant to be nice, polite people. CS Lewis said we are not meant to be nice but new. New people break the law as they stand up for what is right rather than what is polite.
