Sustainability in Urban Mission – Rhythm and Tempo

June 6th, 2007

Often we are invited to discuss the question of “Sustainability in Mission” Sometimes I even feel like I am in some sort of place where the two words actually fit together, and other times I will tell you there is no such thing.

I reckon that it is not so much about rhythm as it is about tempo. Seasons come and go, I need to learn how to go with them. Right now we are really flat out and other times there are less intense times.

The waves of busyness rise and fall – unfortunately I have never been a good surfer…

wow, that is DEEP….i’ve been thinking of sustainability a lot lately…what boundaries/self care do you need to make it for the long haul? ministry is so tough…but i like the image of “tempo” verses rhythm. you should write a book! you are, aren’t you?

What you lack in surfing ability Jon you make up for in your abiltiy to ‘dink’ others on your pushie. Can’t wait for that trip down to the local shop!

I totally agree Jon. And more often than not another person’s idea about what your rhythm should look like won’t really make much sense of your own world. Not to say we shouldn’t listen to others, but just that sometimes we have to work these things out for ourselves.

Through the counsel of friends and some self searching we’ve started trying to have a fortnightly Sabbath (is that an oxymoron?). Anyway, it looks like it might fit us for now … until the tempo changes.

    Keep surfin’.

Thanks for all of the comments guys, I really appreciate your insights and experiences. It is great to know that we all struggle with similar areas.

Unfortunately, my book was burned a little while ago. I was writing it on the computer with a backup on my pda, but my computer was set on fire and my pda was urinated upon three times a day for about 6 weeks, not kiling all of the data, but just enough.

I will try again. He, they say you should burn your first book anyways, so someone else did it for me!
