Hope-full question from Fuq in Joplin, Missouri.

November 17th, 2008

I have met so many passionate Christain guys here at Ozark Christian College. One of them, Fuq, asked me this great quesion, that I often get. ‘What should I do to prepare if God were to call me to go to the slums?’ While every-person will prepare differently, this was my answer to him:

Let God break your heart with the things that breaks his heart. Pray
for his compassion and step out in faith to stand with those who are
lost and poor however you can. Hold the hand of the poor in one hand
and the bible in the other and pray for transformation to come. Find people you can go the journey of discipleship with, who can be honest with you and help you mature and grow to be all God wants you to be. Risk all you
have on Jesus coming through.

What other advice should I give for people?

Obviously doing our Sub-merge course for a year is a great place to start too. Beginning with orientation in Melbourne for 5 months before a placement or apprenticeship with UNOH in Melbourne, Sydney or Bangkok, this is a great course to do for any-one interested in building foundations to serve the poor, no matter where you might end up. It really does help you cover all the bases. We only have 15 places next year and they are filling fast, so please contact Jim for details jim@unoh.org if you are interested.
