Derek & Camille met and married in Bangkok’s largest slum community called Klong Toey. A common desire to live simply and be in loving community with the poor brought them together and led them to relocate to a low income community. They landed on an isolated river island in the middle of Bangkok, where some of the challenges include lack of access to quality education, government services, public transport, and secure work, as well as increasing gentrification, loneliness, absent parents, and alcoholism.

Partnering with Urban Neighbours of Hope (UNOH) and Youth with a Mission (YWAM), the Porters’ daily life & ministry includes running English/craft clubs for youth, hosting afterschool activities, visiting elderly neighbours, and engaging with other marginalized groups like the disabled and asylum seekers. And of course, raising their son, Emmaus River!

Because of their backgrounds, with Derek being raised in Thailand, Camille’s years in the slum, and both having immediate family here, the pair feel uniquely situated to serve long term in Thailand. Guided by the words of Matt 25:37-40, the Porters seek to meet Jesus especially among the poor and needy, wanting to see God’s kingdom come in their immediate neighbourhood through intentional friendships with the “least of these”.

‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink…a stranger and invite you in, or naked and clothe you…sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘I tell you the truth, just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of mine, you did it for me.’ (Matt 25:37-40)
