Don’t just live here, be local…

Recently Dave Tims (Director UNOH, New Zealand) had an opportunity to share his passion for his local community in a Ted Talk at TedxManukau.

“People told me nothing good comes out of our neighbourhood, but it all depends on your lens” said Dave at TEDxManukau. Creating a space for people gives them a voice. It was this desire to give voice to his local community which saw him become an active member of the Randwick Park Residents’ Association, which has since redesigned a local reserve and constructed a new skate park, with the input of locals.

Walz Brown in a Ted Talk at TedxManukau.
Walz was a local in Randwick Park, gang member, drug dealer. UNOH encouraged Walz to move away from this lifestyle of gangs and drugs, helping him to realise his potential as a Youth Worker, a father and a local Leader.  Walz also helped designed Randwick Park’s new Skate Park. UNOH negotiated new Youth Workers positions at the local High School and recommended Walz, plus a couple of others, for the positions.  Walz was offered a full-time one year contract, which he loved, and he has continued at the School since 2012 as a School-based Youth Worker. In 2015 Walz completed a Certificate in Youth Work (NZQA level 3) that was facilitated by UNOH.
